A day of information, inspiration and action.

This FREE event is designed to raise awareness of opportunities in mountain biking product and service development and start you on the journey to bringing ideas to life.

The event will showcase Scottish products already in the market; you will hear from companies already capitalising on the growth of the sport; you will be able to take part in an "inspiration to action" session and then have the chance of an informal 1to1 clinic with an expert to discuss your idea. And if you bring your bike you can go out and play on the trails with Edinburgh Napier and Borders College downhill students with some of the latest gadgetry.

It’s often said that one of the first things to go during an economic downturn is marketing, as businesses seek to tighten their belts.

But is this the right approach or could it simply reduce your turnover even further?

Fusion Linking are inviting Borders Complementary Therapists for a networking evening of shared ideas and exploration (and a light buffet!)

The Fusion mission statement: "Fusion exists to create a more innovative, ambitious and entrepreneurial culture - sustainably. We do this by bringing together business owners and leaders in a variety of informal settings, where they can exchange ideas, share problems and benefit from the experiences of others."

As complementary therapists and small business owners working in the widely dispersed Borders community, we are likely to face similar issues in our business development. We would like to invite each participant to introduce their particular therapy/business briefly (for potential cross referrals and to get an idea of who's who and how we can complement each other), and then for everyone to name one challenge that they're currently facing in their business. We can then pool our knowledge and evaluate various approaches which have worked for us, as well as perhaps develop future themed events from this.

Following up on the successful Winning Through Innovation - Growing Through Technology event held on 14 September, Scottish Enterprise is now offering a free workshop on "Technology Inspired Collaborative R&D". The event will take place on

Thursday, 14 October, 9.30 - 15.00,
at Apex House, 99 Haymarket Terrace, Edinburgh, EH12 5HD.

It is open to all Scottish companies with an interest in collaborative R&D in a technology context. The morning session will address questions such as

what are the potential benefits of collaborative R&D?
how can you find academic or business partners for collaborative projects?
what are the issues you need to consider when forming a partnership or managing a collaborative project?

Scottish companies will be sharing their experience while outlining the challenges of developing successful Collaborative R&D partnerships. There will also be the opportunity to hear what additional support Scottish Enterprise can offer.

Chris started his professional career with Trusthouse Forte hotels in the early 80's before leaving the company with his wife Sue to start running their own hotel.

Starting at The Creebridge House Hotel in Newton Stewart, the pair enjoyed 12 years running the successful country house hotel before selling and moving to Gatehouse of Fleet to turn around the then flagging Masonic Arms.

Winning Scotland's Best loved Pub award in 2005 was one of the highlights in Chris's career and the turning point in his Marketing and social media interest. Creating one of the first on-line marketing e-news subscriptions, Chris started to use Facebook and Myspace to attract a wider audience.

When the opportunity arose to buy the Selkirk Arms Hotel in Kirkudbright, Chris knew that the internet was going to play an pivotal role in Marketing the business. He quickly produced videos for YouTube, re-focused his attention on Facebook, blogging and flickr and, in conjunction with Finlay Carson at CMS, has produced one of the region's most innovative and exciting sites.

Finlay is a director of CMS, a locally based IT firm which started trading 20 years ago primarily to the agricultural sector. The nine employee team now provide IT services, including support services, hardware, software, networking, website and database design to large and small companies across the country.

Traditionally the annual Show is held on the last Friday and Saturday of July each year in Springwood Park, forty-six acres of parkland on the outskirts of Kelso. The Showground is adjacent to the world famous Junction Pool of the rivers Tweed and Teviot with a magnificent view of the Abbey and the unique five arch bridge built in 1802 as a model for the old Waterloo bridge in London.
